We buy better and better TVs and then we listen to them like radio from the kitchen. It’s time to change that

There is a certain paradox in this. We can spend hours watching TV. We compare brightness, contrast, refresh rate, AI processors, HDR support, viewing angles and the number of inches. We are wondering whether it is better to pay extra for a larger screen, a newer matrix or technology that will make the pitch look like it is alive during the match.

And then we put this beautiful, slim, modern screen in the living room and… we listen to the sound from the speakers, which, for obvious reasons, have to fit in a very thin housing.

It’s a bit like buying a sports car and driving it only in first gear. The image is impressive, but emotions are suppressed. Because cinema, sports, concerts and games do not only affect the eyes. They also act on the body. For tension, rhythm, bass, space, silence before the explosion, the noise of the stadium, the hero’s breathing and that moment when the sound does not “play” but draws us into the center of the stage.

That’s why a soundbar is no longer a gadget for audiophiles. It has become one of the easiest ways to make a modern TV finally sound as good as it looks. Today, about 35 percent use it. TV owners. The rest still watch content mainly through the prism of the image, not using the potential of surround sound. This means that most viewers pay for the big screen but give up half the experience.

The problem isn’t that TV manufacturers can’t make sound. The problem is physics. TVs are getting slimmer, and good sound needs space: larger drivers, appropriate channel layout, bass, directivity and power. Built-in speakers have their limitations, which cannot be completely circumvented by software alone. The soundbar is therefore not a whim, but a logical complement to a modern screen.

A good example is Samsung, which introduced the Q-Series 2026 line of soundbars in Poland. These are five models, from the flagship HW-Q990H to HW-Q600H, which are intended to meet various user needs: from a full home cinema with rear speakers to a simpler, elegant set for everyday viewing. The common denominator is Dolby Atmos, artificial intelligence-based features and an attempt to create sound that is not just “louder”, but more spacious, cleaner and better suited to the living room.

The top-of-the-range HW-Q990H shows how far soundbars have come. The 11.1.4 configuration means 11 directional channels, a subwoofer and four upward-firing channels. In practice, the idea is that the sound does not flow only from under the TV, but surrounds the viewer from many sides. Rain can fall “above” us, a helicopter can fly across the room, and stadium cheering does not sound like a flat wall of noise, but like the space in which we are sitting. In addition, there are Dolby Atmos, DTS and HDMI 2.1 with 4K/120 Hz support, which is important for gamers using new generation consoles.

Lower in the range there are models that still offer a lot. The HW-Q930H has a 9.1.4 configuration, subwoofer and wireless rear speakers. HW-Q800H relies on the 5.1.2 system and 3D effect without having to set up the back in the living room. It also supports Eclipsa Audio, a new 3D audio format developed by Samsung, and Sound Elevation, a function that raises the sound stage so that dialogues seem to come closer to the screen. There is also the All-in-One HW-QS90H, with a subwoofer built into the housing, and the HW-Q600H, which opens the Q series and gives you entry into the world of Dolby Atmos without building an extensive set.

The most interesting thing, however, is not only that the soundbar plays louder than the TV. What’s more important is that in the Samsung ecosystem, the TV and soundbar can work together. Q-Symphony technology ensures that the TV speakers are not turned off when the soundbar is connected. Instead, both devices play simultaneously, creating a common soundstage. Artificial intelligence analyzes the material and distributes the sound between channels so that dialogues, effects, music and background are better separated.

This solution makes sense because it does not waste the potential of the TV. Since the screen has its own speakers, they can work as part of a larger system instead of remaining silent. As a result, the sound is more widely distributed, more closely related to the image and more natural. We don’t have the impression that everything comes from one strip under the screen. The scene begins to breathe.

In everyday use, it’s the little things that count, and they’re not trifles at all. Active Voice Amplifier Pro helps you bring out dialogues from the background. Sound Adapted to Space Pro analyzes the acoustics of the room, because a living room with large windows sounds different, a room with a carpet, and an open space with a kitchen. Automatic Volume Control limits annoying jumps between sources, and Night Mode allows you to watch a movie late in the evening without waking up the whole house.

The biggest change, however, is emotional. The match sounds fuller because you can hear the stadium, the pace and the tension. The film works stronger because the dialogue, music and effects don’t fight against each other in one flat track. The game becomes more engaging because it’s easier to hear where the action is coming from. The concert finally has scale, bass and space.

A modern TV is a great start to home entertainment. But only with a good soundbar does it show its full potential. The image tells us what is happening. Sound decides whether we will really survive it. And that’s why a soundbar is not a luxurious addition to a TV today. More and more often, it is the element whose absence is most noticeable.
