Warsaw Mets Juniors are fighting to defend the title of Polish U19 Champion
The Polish U19 American Football Championships are underway, and the Warsaw Mets junior team is once again competing as the defending champion. After winning the Polish Championship in 2024, young players from Warsaw have an ambitious goal ahead of them – to maintain the championship title and confirm their dominance in the junior competitions of the Polish Football League.
This is a unique moment in the club’s history. Warsaw Mets seniors ended the 2025 season by winning the Polish Vice-Champion title, and now their younger colleagues have a chance to add another chapter in the history of American football in the capital.
Warsaw Mets Academy – a breeding ground for future stars
The Warsaw Mets junior section is a dynamically developing part of the club, addressed to young athletes aged 14–19. It is an integral element of the Warsaw Mets Academy – a program created for the training and development of American football players.
Trainings are conducted by a professional training staff, which includes experienced coaches from Poland and the United States, including: Timothy Richardson as head coach, Michael Nones – Defensive Coordinator, Jason Abney – Offensive Coordinator, as well as positional coaches: Clayton Uecker, Maks Szyszko, Przemysław Banat, Krzysztof Andrukonis, Szymon Żołondowski, Rafał Rutkowski, Janusz Barański, Piotr Chomiak and Jakub Łach. Thanks to this, young players have access to training methods consistent with international standards.
In recent seasons, Mets juniors have gone down in history in the Polish Football League: Polish U19 Runner-up – 2023 and Polish U19 Championship – 2024
In the 2025 season, PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna became the main sponsor of the Warsaw Mets Academy, as part of the PGE Junior program, which allows the club to develop even faster and offer young players even better training conditions.
There are 60 players playing for Mets Juniors this season.
Coach TJ Richardson: “We want to be the best in Poland again”
As head coach TJ Richardson emphasizes, the team has undergone an intensive preparation period and is ready to fight for the highest goals.
The recruitment process was really successful this year. We visited schools, organized demonstration lessons for over 600 students and acquired many promising players. About 40% of the current squad are debutants, some of whom will show great potential this season says Richardson.
The team started training in early March, focusing on technique, speed and building teamwork.
– The biggest challenge is to maintain the “hunger for wins”. It’s easy to become complacent after winning the championship, but our goal is to win the title again and continue to develop each player, adds the coach.
Olek Bieniek: “The biggest motivation? Teammates”
One of the pillars of the Mets Juniors defense is Olek Bieniek, a linebacker who has been with the club since 2020.
– I started playing thanks to a friend who invited me to training. After the first meeting, I knew this was the sport for me, Bieniek recalls. – Our goal is to maintain the title of Polish Champion. I want our defense to be the best in the league. My colleagues are my greatest motivation – each of us works hard and I don’t want to let them down.
The player also emphasizes the great atmosphere in the team:
– We are well prepared and we are using every day to enter the season in the best shape. The biggest challenge will be getting along with the new players, but I feel we are on the right track.
Anna Cicha, Team Manager Warsaw Mets Juniors: “Football gives not only sports emotions, but also good memories and new friendships”
The team consists not only of players and coaching staff, but also a large group of people supporting the Club from the organizational side. Everyone works with passion for this discipline. Because American football is not only a sport, but also a community and relationships.
The goal for this season is clear – defending the championship. But we do not forget that the most important thing is that our juniors enjoy the game. Therefore, regardless of the results, for me my boys will still be winners – as long as football gives them good memories and new friendships.
