Poles are extremely proud of Semirunnij, who before the games was one of the contenders for the Olympic medal in the 10 km competition. And indeed, our compatriot won the silver medal in this category. But that’s not all, because during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy (Milan-Cortina), the speed skater also took 10th place over a distance of 1,500 m. It was symbolic that it was Władek (as he is called by his loved ones, colleagues from the sports industry or fans) who was the standard-bearer of the Polish national team during the closing ceremony – together with Gabriela Topolska, a short track competitor.
Semirunni comes from Russia, which probably everyone knows (he was born on December 11, 2002 in Yekaterinburg – on the eastern side of the Central Urals). The extremely talented athlete decided to emigrate from his homeland when dictator Vladimir Putin ordered the army to move to Ukraine. He managed to get to Poland, among others. thanks to the help of Konrad Niedźwiedzki – director of the Polish Speed Skating Association.
Some time ago, in an interview for Polsat News, he announced that he intended to “update his name”. – I’m talking to Konrad (Niedźwiedzki – editor’s note) about it. I won’t tell you now what it will look like. We will deal with it later, he emphasized. As it turns out, he has already taken the first steps towards this.

The athlete of Russian origin, beloved by Poles, revealed that his new surname will end with the letters “n” and “y”. – Thanks to this, it will sound more Polish – he explained (quote from Interia Sport).
The 23-year-old admitted that he wanted to change his name, among others. for the sake of my beloved. – It would be easier to conjugate such (name – ed.). If I understand correctly, if I didn’t change it, my future wife could have problems. I also sometimes see in arenas that fans have difficulty with him.
