US warns, sabotage possible. 'Increased activity near key cables'

The United States has detected increased Russian military activity near key undersea cables, CNN reports. There is a chance that a sabotage operation will eventually take place.

Cable News Network journalists learned about the increased Russian maritime activity around the world from two American officials. “Russia’s calculations regarding the destruction of critical undersea infrastructure of the United States and allies may change,” one of them points out with concern.

Russian ships repeatedly appear near critical maritime and undersea infrastructure, often located at considerable distances from the coast of the country ruled by Vladimir Putin.

Previously, the US had not raised concerns about undersea operations. It is worth adding that cables are a key issue for telecommunications and internet access. It concerns practically the entire world.

British journalists: 160 Russian ships carried out 749 suspicious maneuvers near pipelines and cables

As we reported at the end of June – according to the British “The Times”, journalists have established that in the past, a Belgian maritime security unit allegedly discovered explosives on a British cable. This happened at the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine, in 2022.

“North Atlantic Treaty Organization officials suspect that Russia may have mined critical European Union submarine infrastructure in the North Sea,” the Belarusian Nexta television reported, based on material from a Western daily.

De Tijd, a Belgian news site, found in June that 160 Russian civilian ships had carried out 945 suspicious maneuvers over the past decade. The majority of those maneuvers — 749 — were recorded within 1,000 meters of the pipelines, which are located in the North Sea.

As the journalists wrote, five Russian units (fishing vessels) were circling above them and the cables in a curious manner.
