The Ministry of Foreign Affairs responds to the deterioration of the security situation in Mexico. Radosław Sikorski appeals to refrain from traveling.

The situation in Mexico is becoming increasingly tense. State authorities reported that on Sunday, February 22 in the town of Talpalpa Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes was arrested in the western state of Jalisco.

Chaos in Mexico after the death of “El Mencho”

Known as “El Mencho”, he was one of the largest drug lords in the region. He is the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Mexican services did not disclose details of the operation against the 59-year-old. According to unofficial reports, the gangster was shot during an operation in the mountains of Jalisco. In retaliation, JNGC members began terrorizing the local civilian population. Cars were set on fire and riots with the police occurred. Cartel members set fire to several pharmacies and at least 50 branches of Mexico’s state bank, Banco del Bienestar.

Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch announced that 25 National Guard members were killed in six attacks in the state of Jalisco.

As a result Radosław Sikorski issued an urgent appeal to Polesin which he emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly advises against non-essential travel to Mexico at this time. The minister recommended caution.

Earlier, ministry spokesman Maciej Wewiór said in a conversation with journalists that due to the deterioration of the security situation in some areas of Mexico, in particular in the state of Jalisco and the surrounding area, it is recommended to strictly follow the announcements of local authorities.

The Polish Embassy in Mexico reported that tourists should exercise particular caution in the state of Jalisco and the neighboring states of Michoacan, Guanajuato, Colima, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and Nayarit. Although these are regions less frequently visited by travelers from Poland, the embassy still appeals to follow and adapt to the safety recommendations of state authorities.
