Unrest in southern Europe. Loud rumblings near the supervolcano
A dangerous supervolcano begins to come to life. The people of Naples are at risk. Foreign media write about “loud rumblings and a monster.”
The volcano in question is the Phlegrean Fields. Although it is not as famous as Sicilian Etna, it is very dangerous. For some time now, people living in the area have been feeling less and less safe. Up to 3 million people in Naples could be exposed to the outbreak.
The Phlegrean Fields come to life
The fact that the Phlegraean Fields are becoming active is written, among others, by: The Washington Post. There are comments about loud rumblings from around the volcano. There is something to be afraid of, because in ancient times this place was called the “gate to hell”. Now it’s becoming more and more unpredictable. Giuseppe Mastrolorenzo, a representative of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, said that the pressure could be released like a bomb.
What are we really talking about? About the caldera of a supervolcano with a diameter of 13 kilometers located near Naples. Below it is a gigantic lake of liquid magma, and in its center lies the city of Pozzuoli. There are frequent earthquakes in the area and volcanic gases are released there.
The last eruption occurred around 40,000 years ago. years ago, which led to a huge catastrophe and changes that we still see today. When 285 cubic kilometers of material were thrown into the air, Neanderthal man was wiped out, and sulfur dust covered the sky not only in Europe.
Dangerous situation in Naples
Such tremors in the Phlegraean Fields as are observed now have not been there for 40 years. Today we know that if an explosion occurred, most people living in the surrounding areas would have nowhere to escape. An increase in seismic activity under the Phlegrean Fields has been observed since 2022. The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) leaves no doubt that things are getting worse.
In September this year alone, 160 earthquakes were recorded there. A yellow alert level has been issued. Research shows that magma and gases accumulate under the volcano. In the event of an eruption, at least half a million people living in the caldera and its surroundings will be at risk.
At this point, it is difficult to predict if and when an eruption will occur. If this could be done, it would be possible to evacuate residents earlier. Observations are currently ongoing.
