Who watched the match between Marta Kostiuk and Iga Świątek during the 4th round on the courts. Roland Garros, he knew well what potential we were talking about in the context of the Ukrainian. The tennis player is currently playing the best tennis of her career, and together with Polish coach Sandra Zaniewska, they have created a perfectly complementary duo.

As it turned out, however, in Thursday’s (June 4) semi-final, Kostiuk had almost nothing to say. Mirra Andreeva, the Russian diamond, showed how the semi-finals should be played. Although the tennis player from Russia herself, thanks to the win against the Ukrainian, she recorded her first Grand Slam final in her career.

The match had huge stakes for both tennis players. After the results of the quarterfinals in Paris, it became clear that a debutant at this level would play in the final for the RG 2026 title. Kostiuk, after recently winning the tournament in Madrid (WTA 1000), caught the wind in her sails. It seemed that she would want to follow the example, accomplishing great things on the Parisian stage.

Let us add that in the capital of Spain, the Ukrainian won in the title game… against Andreeva. However, the Russian decided to take revenge on her recent opponent. Although Andreeva is only 19 years old, she has shown much more maturity than the five-year-older Ukrainian. This was visible both in the behavior and the play of both players.

The match actually had no major story. First batch? Lost 1:6 by Kostiuk. The Ukrainian looked completely different in terms of sport than in the clashes with Świątek or the quarterfinal battle with Elina Svitolina.

Kostiuk played different tennis than the one that gave her success in recent weeks. After all, the Ukrainian approached the match against Andreeva with a streak of 17 victories in a row. The series actually started at the beginning of the season on clay courts, in Gliwice, during the winning match between Poland and Ukraine as part of the Billie Jean King Cup.

Andreeva only allowed her opponent to find the right rhythm at times. The Russian consistently played her game, which ensured her success. It is worth emphasizing in particular the teenager’s excellent disposition on her serve. Before the semi-final, Andreeva was beaten by her opponents in RG 2026 only six times.

Interestingly, the Russian had the ball at 5:1 in the second set, but she didn’t take advantage of the opportunity, which made Kostiuk a bit nervous. The Ukrainian broke her opponent’s serve, winning game number seven to zero, 3:4. But what good is it, because a moment later Kostiuk again made a few mistakes, which this time the Russian took advantage of. The return break (3:5) and… it was all over. With the final score 6:3 and 2:0 in the match for Andreeva.

It is worth adding that Kostyuk has repeatedly spoken loudly about the ongoing war in Ukraine and Russia as the aggressor country. The tennis player comes from Kiev and the clash with the Russian was supposed to be an additional dose of emotions for her. Who knows, maybe too big, putting everything together as a whole.

This time, Andreeva could triumph at the end of the match, taking revenge for the defeat in Madrid. And deservedly so, the teenager will play for her first Grand Slam title in her career.

Let us add that in the second semi-final of the women’s singles, Maja Chwalińska will face Diana Sznajder. So another representative of Russia.
