Two islands in Europe for a holiday without crowds. Authentic and peaceful atmosphere

Expedia has published a list of unique islands to visit in 2026. However, it does not only include destinations that almost everyone already knows – the travel agency also promotes places that have their big moment yet to come. The research results are based on the growing number of searches for places that have so far remained in the shadow of the largest tourist players. Among the ten featured proposals, three are located in Europe, and two of them are ideal places for a holiday.

Visit Syros, Greece

While most tourists choosing the Cyclades go to crowded Santorini or Mykonos, Syros remains a much quieter alternative. The island has retained its authentic character – instead of loud clubs and crowded beaches, you will find intimate bays, neoclassical architecture and a leisurely atmosphere. Its heart is Ermoupoli, a beautiful city with pastel tenement houses, marble squares and one of the most beautiful town halls in Greece. This is a place for people who want to combine relaxation by the sea with discovering local culture and the everyday life of residents.

When in Madeira, don’t forget about Porto Santo

The island of Porto Santo, located about forty kilometers from Madeira, has been overshadowed by its more famous neighbor for years. Meanwhile, its greatest advantage is an almost nine-kilometer long sandy beach, which is rare in this part of the Atlantic. Porto Santo attracts lovers of walks, water sports and bicycle trips, and the small number of inhabitants makes it easy to find a place away from the hustle and bustle, even in the season. From Madeira you can either fly here or take a 2.5-hour ferry ride.

In addition to Madeira and Syros, the Expedia ranking includes, among others: Lofoten, the island of Praslin in the Seychelles archipelago and Culebra, which belongs to Puerto Rico. The first place among the places with growing popularity was taken by small Saint Lucia on the Caribbean Sea.
