TV license fees are becoming a thing of the past. This is what awaits Poles

The RTV license fee, currently PLN 27.30 for a TV set and PLN 8.70 for a radio, has long been controversial. Many people avoid paying it, which makes this system ineffective. In response to these problems, a new idea emerged – replacing the RTV license fee with an audiovisual fee.

New fee – details and costs

According to the proposal, the audiovisual fee would be PLN 9 per month, or PLN 108 per year. The payment would be made once, during the annual PIT settlement. However, the fee would be charged not on the number of devices in the home, but on the number of people aged 26-75 in the household. In practice, this means that a family of four (two parents and two adult children) would pay PLN 432 per year. This is over PLN 100 more than the current fee for one TV set as part of the RTV subscription.

For households with more adult members, this change could mean a significant increase in costs. At the same time, costs could be more sustainable on smaller farms.

How does an RTV subscription work?

Currently, an RTV license fee is a fee for owning a radio or television set, which must be paid by the 25th day of each month. To start a payment, the owner of the device must register it. The annual subscription amount is currently PLN 327.60 if it is paid for a TV set.

A change is necessary

According to legislators, the current TV license fee system is ineffective because many people avoid paying it by not registering their receivers. The new audiovisual fee would eliminate this problem by covering all taxpayers in a specific age group. This would enable more effective financing of public media.

Although the idea of ​​an audiovisual fee has been discussed before, the topic is not yet on the parliament’s agenda. For now, the National Broadcasting Council has decided to maintain the current RTV license rates for 2025.
