Tusk wants the Olympic Games in Poland. This is how the volleyball player of the famous "Złotki" commented

Donald Tusk announced Poland’s bid to host the Olympic Games. “I think it’s a very good decision and long awaited,” said former volleyball player and current Civic Platform politician Małgorzata Niemczyk.

Donald Tusk announced that “Poland will formally make efforts to organize the Olympic Games”. – Life will show whether this is a realistic goal, a realistic perspective. Taking into account the initial decisions, commitments, declarations of the International Olympic Committee, we can talk about 2040 or 2044 – stated the head of the Polish government.

“Wprost” asked Małgorzata Niemczyk, a former volleyball player from the “Złotek” team, currently a PO MP, for a comment. “I think it’s a very good decision and long awaited. Both fans and athletes will be in seventh heaven if we manage to make this dream come true,” Niemczyk said at the beginning.

The 2003 European Championship gold medalist warned, however, that we may have a lot of competition. “Many countries are trying to host the games and other international events. Everything will depend on our offer. Although we have never hosted the Olympics, we have a lot of experience in organizing other prestigious sports events, such as EURO 2012,” she said.

Poland praised for organizing sports events

– For years, we have also been organizing major sports events – European Championships, World Championships, for which we receive very positive opinions from European and world federations. The world envies us for our wonderful fans and good organization – Niemczyk noted.

– Everyone is delighted with the organization, support and fans. I have never heard of any reservations – added the Civic Platform MP. According to Niemczyk, “the road, communication, airport and sports infrastructure are already at a high level and will be further developed”, so organizing the Olympic Games in 20 years “is very realistic”.

The KO MP, however, pointed out the difference in workload compared to organizing the Euro. “It was just one discipline, and the Olympic Games are 32 disciplines and 329 events. So these 20 years are a time that must be devoted to solid preparations,” she noted.

Donald Tusk wants the Olympic Games in Poland. Małgorzata Niemczyk mentioned Paris

– Because it’s not just about 10,000 competitors coming and for this event to take place, but also about it being our showcase and national pride, a true celebration of sports – comparable to what I could observe during the games in Paris. Or even better – emphasized Niemczyk. The European Championship gold medalist also referred to sports issues. She noted that in Paris we did not qualify for some events, and in others we did not start at all.

– Games in one’s own country mean easier preparations for competitors. Hosts have a guaranteed start without having to go through qualifications. The preparation cycle for competitors is definitely easier in such a case, they do not have to get in shape for the qualification tournaments, they can calmly prepare for the main event – explained Niemczyk.

– As an athlete, I know perfectly well that peak performance cannot be achieved in very short, consecutive periods, because it is always a sine wave. We can see what medal effect France achieved at these games. Their athletes simply prepared calmly in the so-called Olympic cycle, not the qualification cycle – continued the former player of the Polish national volleyball team.

Sławomir Nitras announced a new sports strategy

Niemczyk, in reference to the announcement of the presentation of a new sports strategy by Minister Sławomir Nitras, admitted that “our entire sports system, starting practically from kindergarten to Olympic medals, requires a very thorough reconstruction”. Physical education classes are in for a huge change. The Civic Coalition MP expressed her satisfaction that “sport receives much more funds than before”, but emphasized that the way in which sports associations spend them and the transparency of these expenses are also important.

In connection with the fact that “countries with smaller financial outlays on sports achieved very high results at these games”. Niemczyk referred to the idea of focusing on several disciplines in order to reap the benefits years later. For example, Uzbekistan won five gold medals in boxing. “Of course, one can make such an assumption, but I am in favor of the even development of all disciplines, not excluding the new ones,” she admitted.

– The key to success here is, of course, identifying talent at the earliest possible stage, but also developing a professional training base, including coaching. This is extremely important, because a player must have the support of specialists who will help bring out his potential. Talent alone at the level of world competitions is definitely not enough to win – continued Niemczyk.

Former volleyball player: There is a shortage of specialists in many disciplines in Poland

The former European Championship gold medalist stated in this context that “in Brazilian volleyball, the same coach has been responsible for training children and youth for many years.” – And we can see that Brazilian volleyball, both women’s and men’s, is still at a very high international level. In Poland, however, in many disciplines, there is a lack of such specialists. We also do not have the so-called positive selection of youth – notes Niemczyk.

– It is very often the case that in clubs, athletes are kept somewhat “by force” in certain sections, they are not recommended to change disciplines, because the club receives money for their training – e.g. from parents, from the local government. It is different, for example, in the United States, a great many outstanding American athletes have joined the queen of sports from other disciplines, because someone realistically assessed their predispositions and optimal development opportunities – concluded Niemczyk.

– We have a lot to do if we want to be proud not only of the organization of the event, but above all of the performance of the Polish Olympic team at the games organized in Poland. The Olympians will mostly be current 3-, 6-, 10-year-olds. This is the moment when we can and should prepare them to reach for the highest Olympic laurels. Everything is in our hands, in the hands of parents, PE teachers, coaches, sports associations, the Ministry of Sport. I wish you good luck and I keep my fingers crossed for Poland’s success – she concluded.
