Trzaskowski before Hołownia and… Lepper. A surprising survey for “Wprost”

Rafał Trzaskowski

Only five of the 56 presidential candidates in the Third Polish Republic were able to enjoy the taste of victory. We asked Poles which of the losing candidates they would like to see in the Presidential Palace. The answers may surprise you.

Although the presidential elections in Poland will not take place until May next year, the first candidates have already submitted their applications, and in the coming days we will find out who will represent the most important parties in the race for the Presidential Palace.

However, before the fight for the highest office in the country takes place, let’s go back to the previous presidential campaigns. There were seven of them in the Third Polish Republic, a total of 56 candidates ran, but only five were able to feel the taste of victory. What about the rest? We decided to check how Poles approach losing candidates after many years and which of them they would entrust with the presidency.

The SW Research poll for “Wprost” took into account candidates who took 2nd-3rd place in the presidential elections held over the last 20 years – starting with Donald Tusk and Andrzej Lepper (2nd and 3rd place in the 2005 presidential elections), to Rafał Trzaskowski and Szymon Hołownia (2nd and 3rd place in the 2020 presidential elections).

Trzaskowski is the leader

When asked: “Which of the following candidates who unsuccessfully ran for the office of president over the last 20 years would you like to see in this position?” Poles most often chose Rafał Trzaskowski (33.5%). The then and probable future candidate of the Civic Coalition is a clear leader. Szymon Hołownia took second place, but he was chosen by much fewer respondents than the mayor of Warsaw (9.5%).
