Trump returns to controversial idea. He wants to buy the largest island in the world
President-elect Donald Trump talked about his intention to buy Greenland during his first term. After the candidate for US ambassador to Denmark was revealed, it is known that he has not abandoned these plans.
Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, is the largest island in the world that is not a continent. It has the status of an autonomous dependent territory, 56 thousand. inhabitants and covers an area of over 2 million square kilometers, of which 410.4 thousand is ice-free.
Before taking office, Donald Trump revealed that he would again try to buy Greenland for the United States.
Trump wants to control Greenland. He writes about it openly
“For the purposes of national security and freedom around the world, the United States of America believes that possession and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” he wrote on Truth Social, while announcing the name of the future US ambassador to Denmark.
The president-elect has indicated that he will appoint Ken Howery to this position. He is a businessman known mainly as the founder of PayPal. Under Trump, he was already ambassador to Sweden. American media emphasize that Howery has also been a friend of Elon Musk for several decades and that they are business partners.
The first attempts to buy Greenland and the diplomatic crisis
Trump tried unsuccessfully to acquire Greenland during his first term. It then caused a serious crisis between the USA and Denmark. When his offer was rejected, Trump canceled his visit to Copenhagen. The transaction was also opposed by the authorities of the island, which has considerable autonomy, which was expanded in 2008.
However, it seems that the United States is seriously interested in Greenland. There is a large American space force base, Thule, located there. This is the northernmost facility of this type for the United States. Its strategic location allows the Americans to track the flight path of intercontinental ballistic missiles that fly over the Arctic. It also allows you to track traffic in the North Atlantic.
