A 68-year-old man who was near the Waksmund Trail has died. The circumstances in which the tragedy occurred should be a warning to tourists.

On Thursday, November 7, the TOPR headquarters received a report of a cardiac arrest in a 68-year-old tourist. The man, in the company of his friends, was on the black trail near Waksmundzki Szlak, RMF FM reported. A helicopter with a group of rescuers was sent to the scene of the incident. Despite cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the 68-year-old’s life could not be saved.

However, rescuers drew attention to the irresponsible behavior of some people who were on the mountain trail and unnecessarily raised their hands in such a way that they resembled the letter “Y”, which confused the pilot. It is worth emphasizing that such a position of hands symbolizes the word “yes” and is a clear signal to service representatives that there is a person in need in a specific area. Unjustified use of this gesture may mislead the pilot who is trying to locate the people waiting for rescue as quickly as possible.

Piotr Konopka, TOPR rescuer on duty, said that tourists should be aware of the serious consequences their behavior may have. – It may even lead to serious consequences, because a person who urgently needs help may not receive it in time – he said in an interview with RMF FM. – If the helicopter lands or – even worse – lands rescuers from the air and it turns out that this place is not the place where the accident victim is waiting, then picking up these underground rescuers and pulling them on the elevator onto the helicopter deck takes time and these may be the minutes that can cost someone waiting for help their life – added the rescuer.
