The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, December 11 at around 7:20 a.m. on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in the Maji ya Chumvi area. While driving to the national park, a Toyota Land Cruiser off-road van driven by Polish tourists was hit head-on by a Mercedes truck.
As a result of the collision, two Poles died. Four other people in the passenger car were seriously injured, including the Poles’ partners, the driver and the guide. They all went to hospital. According to the Associated Press, the condition of one of the women is critical.
The truck driver fled the scene. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident. “An investigation has been launched to determine how the accident happened,” said police spokesman Resila Onyango.
After the accident, there were huge traffic jams on the route as officers and a group of local residents “tried to remove the vehicle wreckage from the road.”
According to the Associated Press, the Nairobi-Mombasa highway is one of the most dangerous main roads in Kenya.
