A couple of tourists from Lithuania decided to go to Rysy with their nine-month-old child. When they were descending from the summit, Polish guide Szymon Stoch helped them. The story caused a huge storm on the Internet. A wave of criticism fell on the parents. Internet users accused them of recklessness and endangering the health and life of the child.

Szymon Stoch revealed what the whole situation looked like from his perspective. The guide emphasized that “at the very beginning of the conversation with the Lithuanian couple, he pointed out that the safest way for the child would be to transport it down by helicopter.”
However, the tourists did not want to agree to such a solution and notifying the services. However, it is not true that this was due to the lack of insurance.
– They said they would come down the mountain. I explained to them that it wasn’t right. I drew their attention to the equipment deficiencies, he explained. The couple had hands on their feet, but they were mainly suitable for walking in the valleys and not for climbing higher parts of the mountains.
– The conditions were good, but they were alpine conditions. So crampons and helmets were still needed. If they had all the equipment and everything was as it should be, I wouldn’t have reacted, he added.

The Lithuanians, however, agreed to allow Szymon Stoch to carry their child through the most difficult section. – I took the child and started walking down with him. I showed them where to go. In three places I even cut down steps and gave them poles so that they had something to climb on, the guide reported in an interview with Radio Zet.
The guide added that “he wears crampons well, the entire descent was completely safe and he has nothing to complain about.”
Szymon Stoch admitted that he was embarrassed by the whole situation. “When we got down to a safe place, I gave them the baby and I didn’t want to talk to them anymore,” he said.
