The morning of September 26 was not a peaceful day for residents and tourists in Tenerife. Around 9 o’clock, they received special messages calling for evacuation. Exercises have been prepared for several months, being aware of the risk of a volcano explosion. Everyone on the island received an SMS with a potential threat.
Exercise escape from the volcano
The Teide volcano in the Canary Islands wakes up after 116 years. It has been loud about this fact for a long time. Now there was an announced action in which, among others The army, emergency services and scientists. Already 7 am, 250 inhabitants of the town of Garachico were evacuated to protect them from a fictitious stream of lava. According to the assumptions, she was to reach the Atlantic Ocean in just an hour. This place was chosen, because in 1706 this town experienced the most destructive eruption in the history of the Canary Islands.
According to the script at 9.00 local time throughout the island residents and tourists received an SMS from the ES-Alert system, and at 10.00 a fictitious volcano broke out. Exercises and eruption will not be completed only around 4pm. What the situation looks like, explained the coordinator for the crisis situations of the Tenerife Island Council, Néstor Padrón. These are the first exercises in Spain on such a large scale. They are about to know what to do and be able to save your own life in case of hypothetical eruption. The simulation included five scenarios and thirteen events; Some of them were to require real actions, e.g. searching for missing people.
