The quarterfinal of the Indian Wells tournament was supposed to be a serious test for Iga Świątek, whether she is really returning to the highest level. The stakes were high: a semi-final of a prestigious tournament and very important points for the WTA ranking. In the previous rounds, the Pole defeated Maria Sakkari (6:3, 6:2) and Karolina Muchova (6:2, 6:0) without any major problems.

Indian Wells. A nervous start for Iga Świątek

However, the match started not as the Polish fans had imagined. Problems with the service were obvious from the very first minutes. Świątek made double faults and Svitolina immediately took advantage of it. The Ukrainian broke the Pole at the very beginning, and a moment later she did it again.

The scoreboard quickly showed 0:3, and after the next few minutes the opponent’s advantage was even greater. Iga Świątek tried to react – she even managed to break back once. But on this day the service was clearly letting her down. After 40 minutes, the first set of the match ended with the score 6:2.

After the break, the Pole returned to the court completely changed. She took the initiative in exchanges more often. In the fourth game of the second set, she broke the Ukrainian and took a 3-1 lead. However, Elena Svitolina did not give up.

She took advantage of the Polish woman’s moment of distraction and equalized the score 4:4. The ending was tense, but at the key moment it was Iga Świątek who kept her serve, then broke her opponent and won the second game 6:4, leading to the decisive set.

In the third set, both tennis players gave the fans a small heart attack. They kept an eye on their service games for a long time and only when the score was 4:4 there was a breakthrough, unfortunately the worst possible one for our player.

Elena Svitolina took advantage of a weaker part of Iga Świątek’s game and first broke it and then confidently held her serve, leading to a 6:4 victory and securing advancement to the 1/2 finals of Indian Wells.

The defeat has serious consequences for the Pole. Iga Świątek lost her position as the WTA runner-up. Before the tournament, the difference between our tennis player and Jelena Rybakina, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula was small. After Kazaszka finished in the top four at Indian Wells, she was in second place with an advantage of 110 points over Iga Świątek.
