Three years that will decide about Poland? 8 economists point out great opportunities and threats
We asked 8 leading Polish economists what future they see for Poland. We wanted to provide 3 opportunities and 3 threats for the development of the Polish economy in the next 3 years. The experts’ answers were not clear, although most of them agreed on certain topics.
Most economists considered deteriorating competitiveness to be the greatest threat to Poland. – It is not just the loss of cost advantages that is the problem. In a sense, it is a natural result of the success of convergence: wages are rising, the standard of living is rising, so Poland cannot remain an economy of “relatively cheap and well-skilled work”. Rather, the danger would be to get stuck between the cost model and the innovation model. If the increase in labor costs is not balanced by an increase in productivity, innovation, automation and the participation of Polish companies in the more profitable parts of global value chains, the current development may slow down – explains Prof. Marian Gorynia, president of the Polish Economic Society.
