This time not in Zakopane but in Barcelona. Here they also have very vulgar souvenirs

Souvenirs sold in tourist countries are very important to tourists. We reach for them willingly and support local markets. It turns out that the items offered to us are not always suitable.

This time, vulgar souvenirs have been brought to the fore in Barcelona. This iconic Spanish city faces a crazy influx of tourists during the season. The beaches are teeming with locals and visitors. There is also no shortage of passers-by on the streets and potential customers who want to savor the local cuisine or buy interesting accessories. Some of them can be very badly perceived.

Vulgar souvenirs in Barcelona

Souvenirs that are considered to be in bad taste are those with a sexual connotation. It turns out that the streets have been swarming with such items so far. The worst are those created in a homophobic style. These include dolls, magnets and key rings. Gadgets take on many different forms and new versions are constantly being created.

“It’s hard to standardize because what’s considered bad taste is a very subjective matter,” local authorities noted, fed up with vulgar souvenirs. It’s known that the city has already made specific decisions and taken actions to eliminate such products from public spaces, at least a little bit.

“The current memorabilia is a sloppy mess that is destroying the city,” local media were told, noting that it is reducing Barcelona’s tourist value and damaging its image.

Authorities fight against souvenirs

A while ago, on June 28, the Barcelona City Council approved a motion that would introduce a ban on the sale of souvenirs with a sexual or homophobic message. Barcelona’s deputy mayor for the economy, Jordi Valls, pledged make every effort to remove offensive gadgets from stores.

It has been noticed that the whole process can be quite difficult because the regulations do not allow for the establishment of regulatory criteria regarding the content or aesthetic quality of souvenirs. At the moment, vulgar objects can still be found in the city. Will the situation change? We should wait until the authorities’ decisions are implemented. Is it possible? That remains to be seen.

It is worth adding that not all of the assortment available in Barcelona may be perceived negatively. There are also many colorful and non-offensive accessories worthy of attention. The problem with vulgar souvenirs also appears in Poland. Recently, tourists noticed that gadgets insulting political parties or politicians were being sold in Zakopane.
