The Republic of Cape Verde, also known by its Portuguese name Cabo Verde, is a small country located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 450 kilometers from the western coast of Africa. Although the country has less than 600,000 inhabitants, inhabitants, for years it has been considered one of the most politically stable and safe countries in Africa.
The country consists of ten main volcanic islands and 16 smaller islets. The most famous of them are Sal, Boa Vista, Santiago (where the capital Praia is located), Sao Vicente (famous for its cultural life) and Santo Antao (has numerous picturesque trekking routes).
The archipelago has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in recent years. European tourists associate Cabo Verde primarily with sandy beaches, sunny weather almost all year round and turquoise waters of the Atlantic. Temperatures there stay between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius most of the year.

However, the country’s history is much more complex. The islands were uninhabited until the 15th century, when Portuguese sailors discovered them. Due to its strategic location between Europe, Africa and America, it quickly became an important trading point. For centuries, they also functioned as one of the centers of the Atlantic slave trade.
Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal only in 1975. Since then, the country has come a long way from a poor developing country to one of Africa’s most highly regarded democratic systems. Free elections are held there regularly, and successive changes of government take place peacefully.
Politically, Cape Verde is a parliamentary republic. The president performs mainly representative functions, while the prime minister and the government play the most important roles in running the state. International organizations often point to Cabo Verde as an example of a successful democratic transition in Africa.
However, this does not mean that the country is without problems. Reason? The archipelago has very limited natural resources, little agricultural potential and is dependent on food imports. Remittances from emigrants living mainly in Portugal, France, the Netherlands and the United States are of great importance.
