This problem at the seaside comes back every holiday. There is a way

This holiday, walks by the sea can be used for more than just relaxation. For the sixth time, the Maritime Office in Gdynia invites you to volunteer to protect the Polish coast and get to know its beautiful sections “behind the scenes”.

Throughout the holidays, from June 30 to August 31, 2026, volunteers will inform beachgoers about the need to protect the technical strip (beach, dune and forest) on the section of the sea shore – from the eastern border of Poland through Sztutowo, Tricity, Hel Peninsula, Karwia to Lubiatowo. Working hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., but it is possible to arrange dates and times individually.

Volunteer tasks will include:

• informing tourists about the need to protect coastal dunes and the role that dunes and coastal forests play in protecting the coast

• drawing attention to inappropriate behavior (littering, passing outside designated entrances, lighting bonfires, destroying dune vegetation and elements of biotechnical development of the dunes – fences, pickling, laying with brushwood)

• informing the guardian – supervisor of the Coastal Protection Tour about noticed threats and problems

“The damage during the holidays is great. People think that the dunes are used for sunbathing and meeting their needs, but this is not the case. They are a natural habitat for various birds that nest there. Moreover, they are a natural embankment that protects against flooding during a storm,” explains Robert Mokrzycki from the Maritime Office in Gdynia.

What will volunteers gain?

The office lists the benefits as: learning about the specifics of the work of coastal protection services, as well as getting a tan and working on your fitness. Volunteers will first be trained and provided with appropriate clothing, and finally they will receive certificates. Admission to the group of volunteers is based on the order of applications.
