VIP vacuum panels provide insulation comparable to 17 cm of Styrofoam with a thickness of only 2 cm. However, they have several significant drawbacks.
Growing requirements for energy efficiency mean that investors are increasingly looking for alternatives to traditional polystyrene. One of the most advanced insulating materials are VIP vacuum panelswhich offer very high efficiency with minimal thickness. Although their parameters are impressive, this solution is still a niche product.
VIP vacuum panels provide exceptional insulation
Vacuum panels (Vacuum Insulation Panel – VIP) consist of a microporous core enclosed in a tight cover from which the air has been removed. This reduces heat conduction to a minimum.
Their thermal conductivity coefficient λ is usually from 0.006 to 0.008 W/(m·K). For comparison, classic EPS polystyrene usually reaches values of 0.038–0.042 W/(m·K). In practice, this means that a panel with a thickness of approximately 20 mm can provide insulation comparable to a layer of polystyrene with a thickness of approximately 17 cm.
However, such good parameters mean that the quality of the panels and their correct installation are of key importance.
Where do modern boards work?
The biggest advantage of this solution is the ability to obtain very good insulation where there is no room for a thick layer of insulation.
The panels are used primarily when modernizing older buildings, tenement houses or historic buildings. They are also used to insulate balconies, terraces, loggias and walls from the inside. The technology is also used outside construction – among others, in refrigerators, freezers and specialized medical containers.
High price and delicate design
The biggest obstacle remains the cost of purchase. For a square meter of a 20 mm thick vacuum panel you have to pay about PLN 250-400, which is several times more than for traditional Styrofoam.
An additional problem is the material’s sensitivity to damage. The panels must not be cut, drilled or their tight coating disturbed. Its damage causes a significant deterioration of the insulating properties, which may invalidate the investment.
For this reason, installation requires a very precise design and appropriate protection of the panels against damage during subsequent finishing works.
Will VIP panels replace polystyrene?
Although the technology offers impressive parameters, experts do not expect it to replace traditional Styrofoam in the coming years. The panels retain their properties for approximately 20-30 years and are best suited for demanding projects where every centimeter of partition thickness counts.
For most investors, classic Styrofoam is still a more profitable solution. VIP vacuum panels will most likely remain a specialized material used primarily where the use of standard insulation is impossible or very difficult.
