This is when Poles most often buy alcohol. The data may be surprising

During the period of heated discussion about the sale of alcohol at night, it was checked at what times Poles buy it most often. The disclosed data may be surprising.

For several weeks, a discussion has been going on in Poland regarding the ban on selling alcohol at night. Opponents of this solution emphasize that such a ban affects the freedom of customers and will mean large losses for entrepreneurs. In turn, supporters of the idea cite data showing that thanks to such regulations, the number of police interventions decreases and it will also reduce the burden on hospital emergency departments (EDs).

How often do Poles buy alcohol at night? PanParagon checked this by analyzing the share of receipts containing alcohol in the total number of transactions, divided into days of the week and hours. The data covers various sales points (from large retail chains and gas stations to restaurants and bars).

What hours do we buy alcohol? Not at night at all

Data quoted by dlahandlu.pl show that the vast majority of alcohol purchases are made between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., the share of receipts with interest rates remains at 5-7 percent. These values increase as the day goes on, reaching 10-14 percent. from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., every sixth or even every fifth receipt contains alcohol, and between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., the share reaches 16.5%. Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., overall shopping activity drops significantly, although just after 10 p.m. the share of alcohol is still quite high (sometimes 18%), which may suggest that many consumers make last-minute purchases, before most stores close.

After 10 p.m., the total number of receipts drops sharply, so a high percentage of alcohol in this range does not mean that consumers buy more alcohol at that time – it is rather due to the fact that there are much fewer transactions in total, and alcohol appears more often among them – explains Antonina Grzelak from the PanParagon application, quoted by the portal.

In the following hours, the indicators decrease rapidly – between 00.00 and 3.00 the share is 5-9 percent, and between 3.00 and 5.00 only 3 percent.

PanParagon experts also checked the differences in the frequency of buying alcohol by Poles by day of the week. From Monday to Thursday, shopping is relatively stable – the share of alcohol in receipts increases gradually during the day and reaches its peak in the evening, oscillating around 15-18%. On Friday, the values increase dramatically, especially in the evening, when up to every fifth receipt contains alcohol. Saturday maintains similar dynamics, but a high level of alcohol sales is visible already in the morning, which proves intensive preparations for meetings and weekend activities. Sunday stands out, when the share of alcohol on receipts is high both in the morning and in the evening.
