This is the strangest lake in the world. The surface resembles elephant skin
The world of nature can surprise us, as we have seen many times. A certain lake on a small island has been exciting tourists and scientists for years.
You’ve probably already heard about the largest or widest lake in the world. Many people are also interested in reservoirs that disappear or those that are reborn after years, such as the Aral Sea on the border of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. However, there is a place that cannot be compared to them in any way and is a real sensation for a reason other than its size or water level. You can walk on it and it looks like it’s out of this planet.
The strangest lake in the world
We are talking about Pitch Lake, located on the Caribbean island of Trinidad near the city of La Brea. Its area is 46 ha and the maximum depth determined by gravimetric measurements is 106 m. However, this is not the key. As the name suggests, the tank has a lot in common with asphalt. Some even point out that it is made of the same stuff as New York and London. How is this possible?
This unusual Caribbean lake is not filled with clear water, but with thick, dark fluid that looks like tar. Interestingly, it bubbles and resembles a witches’ swamp or a space from a science-fiction movie. In fact, it is the truest natural wonder that has been on our planet for thousands of years. Its formation is estimated to be around 50 million years ago, when the movements of tectonic plates released crude oil, which then oxidized on the surface and mixed with local mud and gases.
The place fascinates tourists and scientists not only due to its appearance, but also its unusual properties. It turns out that the lake absorbs everything around it, including: artifacts of indigenous tribes or other items. Moreover, modern biologists have discovered there unique, extremely resistant bacteria existing in tiny water droplets.
The unusual surface of the Asphalt Lake
Lake Asphalt is so strange and fascinating that some people call it the miracle of the Caribbean. It is also noted that its surface resembles elephant skin – mainly due to its massive texture and dark colors.
Natural asphalt from the lake is used and exported as a construction material. It was he who covered many streets around the world, including: Pall Mall in London. Currently, asphalt obtained from the lake is refined, during which it is removed from water, organic impurities and rock fragments. The lake’s resources serve as an alternative to artificial products of this type.
Do you want to go there? The lake in the Caribbean is open to tourists, and some even try to swim in it, seeing the healing potential of the place due to the sulfur present in it. You can also walk on the reservoir because the asphalt is hard in many places. Reservoirs similar to the one on the island of Trinidad are very rare. Smaller ones can be found, among others: in La Brea Tar Pitst in California or Venezuela.
