This is the lowest point in Poland. This was not known for years
You can’t set foot lower in Poland. Only two years ago it was confirmed where the deepest depression in our country is located.
The question about the highest point in Poland is one of the simplest ones. Every student knows that this is Rysy, the highest peak in Poland (2499 m above sea level). It may be more difficult to indicate the lowest one. Until recently, many people would answer “Raczki Elbląskie”. The town has a depression at 1.8 meters below sea level, and tourists were taking photos at the sign.
This is the lowest point in Poland
Currently, this point in the Google search engine functions as “Former lowest point in Poland”. In 2022, Marzęcino, a village in Poland, in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, officially took the lead. The name certainly seems familiar to everyone who passes through Nowy Dwór Gdański to the seaside. The difference between these points is small – the depression in Marzęcin is 2.2 m below sea level
Signals that the textbooks needed to be updated appeared in 2013, as reported by historian Edmund Łabieniec and surveyor Jacek Gross. In 2019, the Central Office of Cartography and Geodesy confirmed these findings, and in 2022, information about the new lowest point was included in the Little Statistical Yearbook of Poland 2022.
Marzęcino. A meadow in the place of the former reservoir
In Marzęcin, just like in Raczki Elbląskie, this unique place in Poland is also marked. “We came to the conclusion that we needed to build something that would be visible,” said the then staroste of Nowy Dwór, Jacek Gross. “Finally, a replica of a triangulation tower was built in Marzęcina, similar to those that used to be common in Poland and were used for geodetic measurements,” he said. The point is located on the former bottom of the Vistula Lagoon in a place called Zakątek Stobiecki. Currently it is a meadow. Many people recommend going there on foot, preferably in wellingtons, because the road is bumpy.
Interestingly, you can get a certificate for “scoring” the lowest point.
From Marzęcin it will be just a stone’s throw to explore Żuławy Wiślane. If you skipped this area of Poland on your way to the seaside, it is worth expanding your trip plan next time. The area located in the Vistula Delta, between Gdańsk, Malbork and Elbląg, has a lot to offer.
