This is how the Polish national team fights! Tennis players with a historic result

Minimally, although it must be given to the Italians that it was a well-deserved victory for them. The doubles of the Polish national team actually “formed” only during the tournament in Malaga. Katarzyna Kawa and Iga Świątek gave their absolute all.

Italian women are better than Polish women. A great fight until the very end

The Monday-Tuesday game started with the defeat of Magda Linette, who lost quite unexpectedly to Lucia Bronzetti in two games. This match meant that, just like in the quarterfinals of BJKC 2024, the Polish women were up against the wall. Iga Świątek had to win in singles, and then the WTA ranking runner-up had to switch to doubles – again in a duo with Katarzyna Kawa.

The task was accomplished, because Świątek won the singles match against Jasmine Paolini, again showing that the “Polish” Italian (her mother is Polish) did not find a match for the girl from Raszyn. Another thing is that Paolini showed her very good side, putting as much pressure on Świątek as possible. In fact, the match could have ended with the Italian winning. However, the Pole was able to escape defeat twice in key moments, adding important points that resulted in success in three sets.

Finally, there was the doubles, where for the second time in a row that day, but also… the next day, because the match ended after midnight from Monday to Tuesday, both Świątek and Paolini played. The former in a duet with the mentioned Kawa, and the latter with Sara Errani. A great doubles player, the winner of practically everything that could be won in this type of tennis. The 37-year-old player showed extraordinary class against the Poles.

It must be admitted, however, that we were close to being lucky, or at least dragging the match to the third set. The Polish women were leading 5:1 in the second set and, unfortunately, they stopped scoring points, as was the case before. The Italians increased the pace, there were mistakes and perhaps also fatigue, and as a result the score was 5:7. The first batch ended with the same result.

After the last ball, there were tears in Świątek’s eyes. However, the Polish woman was quickly hugged by her teammates and it was obvious that a smile appeared on the player’s face. Certainly, sporting ambition does not allow for joy after defeat, but Świątek will undoubtedly have the opportunity to fight for something big as the leader of the national team more than once.

The Polish women deserve great applause for their ambitious fight during the tournament in Malaga. The national team won 2-0 against Spain, 2-1 against the Czech Republic, and only the Italians, the absolute top team in the world, managed to stop the fast-paced team of captain Dawid Celt.

Historic success of the Polish national team in the Billie Jean King Cup!

Thanks to Saturday’s victory over the Czechs, the Polish tennis team made history by advancing to the semi-finals.

Poland made its debut in the competition in the era of the so-called amateur tennis, exactly in 1966, reaching the second round. Until 2024, the Polish women’s best result was the quarterfinal in 1992 (the team leader was Katarzyna Nowak at that time) and the 2015 edition, with the participation of Agnieszka Radwańska.

It is also worth adding that the current name, i.e. Billie Jean King Cup, has been in operation since 2020. Previously, the competition, modeled on the men’s Davis Cup, was called the Federation Cup and Fed Cup. The result achieved in the 2024 finals in Malaga is therefore a reason for great satisfaction for Polish women.

The defending champions of 2023 are the Canadians, who defeated the Italians 2-0 in the title match. Already after the results of the quarterfinals (Canada was eliminated by Great Britain), it is known that in this context there will be a change and BJKC will have new champions.
