Iran has played its first match at the FIFA World Cup. It ended in a draw (2:2) with New Zealand. However, the Iranians revealed what they have to face.
We wrote more about the tense situation surrounding the appearance at the FIFA World Cup in the United States (in particular), Canada and Mexico – the Iranian national team – before Iran’s first match. The situation is unenviable. Suffice it to say that the Iranian national team’s players have their base in Mexico, and for matches they have to travel to the USA, where they are not allowed to stay longer than one match day.

The Iranian team found its place on the Mexican side, and the proposal to host this team was even made by the president of Mexico herself, Claudia Sheinbaum. Despite the great hospitality of one of the host countries, it is still not easy when the Iranian team has to deal with various, completely non-sporting issues during the ongoing tournament.
In their debut at the 2026 World Cup, the Iranians drew (2:2) with New Zealand. The match was very interesting, the spectacle at the stadium in Los Angeles was enjoyable. After the meeting, Iran’s players sat down for interviews and openly talked about what they had to experience during the ongoing World Cup.
“We will not look for excuses, but this is not a fair competition” – you could hear in front of the cameras from the mouths of the players who want to represent their country as best as they can. “Disaster” – added from the Iranian team camp.
Is this what reality should look like at the biggest football event of the last four years? In this context, FIFA clearly has nothing to complain about, and the United States – as announced – is far from typical tournament hospitality.
And it seems that this is a very delicate term in relation to the actions of the US.
World Cup 2026. Where and when to watch the greatest football World Cup in history?
From June 11 to July 19, the 23rd FIFA World Cup will be held on pitches in three countries – the United States, Mexico and Canada. An event that will certainly be unique, if only because of its format. For the first time in history, as many as 48 teams will take part in the main tournament.
The title from four years ago is defended by the Argentines. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Lionel Messi and company defeated the French in the final, winning after a series of penalties (4:2). In the history of football World Cups, Brazil has the most titles – as many as five. Four victories in the history of the World Championships belong to the Italians and Germans. The Argentines won three times. More than once, the trophy for winning the World Cup was raised – twice – by the players of France and Uruguay.
The Polish national team was third twice at the World Championships, but those were the old days – we are talking about the events in 1974 and 1982. At the last World Cup, Poles managed to advance to the knockout phase, but were eliminated in the 1/8 finals by the French (1:3).
