On November 14, we celebrate National Seniors Day. This is an excellent opportunity to remind you about an important discount for people 65 plus, which not everyone remembers. It’s about cheap travel.
Discounted tickets for seniors can be found not only on PKP trains. Local carriers in many cities also have their own offers. They usually offer cheaper public transport rides. We checked what it looks like in Warsaw and it turns out that with one option you can save a lot.
Cheap ticket for seniors
The National Seniors’ Day is a great opportunity to inform the uninitiated about the special ticket. On November 14, people aged 65+ can count on many special promotions aimed at them. For example, PKP sells tickets for PLN 1.
The promotional ticket in Warsaw is valid regardless of whether it is a holiday or not. It costs PLN 50 and thanks to it you can travel around the city without limits all year round. This applies to all day lines and night lines in zones 1 and 2. You must meet specific conditions and be eligible for the discount.
This is how you can buy an annual senior ticket
We can buy an annual senior ticket for PLN 50 in Warsaw if we are over 65 years old. It is personal, so no one other than us will be able to use it. It can be purchased at Passenger Service Points, other stationary sales points, and from ticket machines. You must have a document confirming your age with you.
For convenience, the ticket can be encoded on the Warsaw Payment Card, Masovia Card or City Card that has been accepted by ZTM – each of these cards is issued by the city. You pay PLN 50 one time and then activate the card by tapping it on a validator, e.g. in a bus. This only needs to be done on the first journey after purchasing the ticket. Moreover, each time we bring our document closer to the device, we will also see information about the ticket’s validity date.
The next purchase will only be necessary one year after the first deletion. Of course, provided that we want to continue using the rides. The savings on the senior annual ticket are very large. For example, a normal personal ticket for 90 days without any discounts for zones 1 and 2 costs PLN 460. To benefit from such a discount throughout the year, we would have to repeat such a purchase as many as 4 times, i.e. once a quarter. This gives a total of PLN 1,840.
Please remember that retirees and pensioners who are over 70 years of age are entitled to free travel. During ticket inspection, it is enough to show your ID card or other document with a photo and visible date of birth. Entitlements to free travel are also uploaded to the City Card after submitting the application.
