This function literally devours your battery on your smartphone. There are tests

This function was to save the battery in smartphones. It was introduced by hundreds of the most popular applications. Meanwhile, as the latest research shows, it causes faster battery discharge.

According to “The Telegraph”, citing the latest research of scientists, one of the functions instead of saving energy, contributes to faster battery discharge in the smartphone. It is about including “dark mode” on websites and in applications that should help save energy.

Hundreds of applications have introduced a darker version of their interfaces, which tone colors or adds a black background compared to the original “light mode”. Apple and Google offer “dark mode” in their Android and iOS operating systems, and the X platform (formerly Twitter) even made it default for its users.

Turning on the “dark mode” on the smartphone

Why does “dark mode” not save the battery? This is because after its inclusion as much as 80 percent. Users increase screen brightness, which leads to greater energy consumption.

– Some of the most frequently recommended activities for sustainable development are too simplified – to such an extent that many of them simply do not work as it should. In the case of “dark mode”, paradoxically, it can use more energy – he said in an interview with “The Telegraph” Zak Datson, the BBC R&D engineer.

The scientist explained that the problem results from the real behavior of users. Many modern smartphones are equipped with OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screens. In these devices, the display of black color turns off the pixels, which theoretically should save energy. Meanwhile, when the BBC asked the participants of their experiment to set the preferred level of brightness in the BBC Sounds application (which offers a light and dark background), 8 out of 10 people increased brightness when using dark mode. As a result, smartphones used more energy in dark mode than in light, but on condition that the brightness of the screen was not changed.

How to save the battery on your smartphone correctly?

Scientists have found that the best way to save battery in a smartphone is to set clarity to the lowest level – which allows you to use up to half less energy compared to the screen set to maximum brightness.
