This equipment “eats” electricity at night. Turn it off before bed to reduce your bills

Some devices use electricity even when you are not using them. Standby mode can increase bills by up to several hundred zlotys per year.

Rising energy prices make more and more people pay attention to electricity consumption at home. Many electrical devices consume energy even when not in use. If left in standby mode all night long, they may generate additional costs, which over time significantly increase energy bills.

Conscious use

Conscious use of home appliances can help reduce expenses. It is worth knowing which devices consume the most energy and how to reduce their impact on your home budget.

PGNiG data shows that one of the largest consumers of energy in the home is the induction hob. The refrigerator also generates significant electricity consumption, using approximately 270 kWh of energy per year. An electric kettle consumes slightly less, but still a lot – its annual consumption is estimated at about 240 kWh.

Devices left in standby mode are also a problem. Televisions, computers and other electronic devices often run in the background even when no one is using them. They remain plugged in throughout the night and gradually increase their energy consumption.

Therefore, it is worth getting into the habit of turning off devices and disconnecting chargers when they are not needed. Even small changes in everyday habits can translate into lower bills.

Laptops and game consoles also consume a lot of energy. Disconnecting them at night can save you approximately PLN 30 per year. A similar situation applies to microwave ovens, which also consume electricity in standby mode.

We cannot forget about Wi-Fi routers and desktop computers, which often work around the clock. The standby mode of such devices alone may cost another PLN 30 per year. It is also worth turning off decoders with a recording function, which, if left on, may consume energy unnecessarily.

In an average Polish household, several to a dozen or so devices operate in standby mode at the same time. In total, they can draw approximately 20 to 50 watts of power continuously.

Consumption per year

Annually, this means energy consumption ranging from approximately 175 to even 438 kWh. At current electricity prices, this translates into costs ranging from approximately PLN 170 to even PLN 440 per year for electricity, which in practice is not used.

One of the easiest ways to reduce these expenses is to use power strips that have an on/off switch. Thanks to them, you can cut off the power to the entire set of RTV devices, such as a TV set, decoder or console, in one move.

Smart sockets are also an increasingly popular solution. They allow you to set a schedule for your equipment, such as automatically cutting off the power at night, between midnight and 6 a.m.

Although individual devices consume small amounts of energy, their combined operation around the clock can generate noticeable costs. Therefore, regularly turning off equipment and checking its operation is one of the easiest ways to reduce electricity bills.
