This castle was Janosik’s oasis. It is only 2 hours by car south of Krakow

We move to the Niedzica Castle, also known as the Dunajec Castle. It is hidden in a picturesque village located at the foot of the Spiš Pieniny Mountains and on the shores of the Czorsztyński Reservoir. Tourists visit there during the May and June holidays, as well as during the holidays, to discover old stories and the space where, among others, “Janosik”. There are many attractions on site. You can explore and relax surrounded by nature.

The castle in Niedzica attracts tourists

This is one of those castles that, like Ogrodzieniec, Książ or Pieskowa Skała, is associated with film works. Scenes shot inside the Niedzica Castle or on its outskirts become memorable, and many people want to see them with their own eyes.

The facility can be found among lush nature and with mountains in the background. It is looked after by the Museum’s Art Historians Association, and the interior can be visited. The place, although built between 1308 and 1313, still looks very good. It once served as a stronghold, today it is a combination of a museum and a stylish hotel. You will see, among others: the Salamons’ chambers equipped with objects from the 16th–19th centuries, wooden stairs leading to the observation deck and historic dungeons. It is worth planning a visit during a holiday in the area or, for example, a bicycle trip along the Velo Czorsztyn route.

Janosik ran around this castle

Janosik, the title character of the cult series from 1973 and the later film in which the main role was played by Marek Perepeczko, is a character valued and liked by Poles. Importantly, she really existed as a Slovak highwayman living at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The real story of Janosik differs significantly from the film creation, but many people learned about the existence of the man thanks to it.

The actor playing Janosik was often seen on the screens walking around the courtyard, defensive walls, the eastern tower and around the entrance gate. It should not be forgotten that many scenes of the above-mentioned work were also shot in other places in Poland. Other works were also recorded at the Niedzica Castle, including: “Revenge” or “Ghost Holidays”.
