They waited 29 years to break the record. This fish is a real specimen

Teresa Croy, White Crappie

American angler Teresa Croy achieved quite a feat by breaking the record of catching a fish called white crappie (a type of bass from the perch family) set nearly 30 years ago.

Teresa Croy of Ottawa, Ohio set a new state record for white crappie. She caught the fish in a pond owned by the Glandorf Rod and Gun Club in Putnam County. The specimen weighed 3.91 pounds (1.77 kg), surpassing the previous record of 3.90 pounds (1.76 kg), which had been held by Kyle Rock since April 25, 1995. Information about the unusual catch was confirmed by the Ohio Division of Wildlife in an official Facebook post.

The largest white crappie in Ohio history. Teresa Croy caught the fish of a lifetime

The record white crappie measured an impressive 18.5 inches (close to 47 cm) in length. Croy used 8-pound line and a worm as bait, showing that even simple fishing techniques can produce spectacular results.

The fish was weighed on a certified scale, which is a standard procedure for setting records. The Ohio Division of Wildlife emphasizes that these types of records are determined solely by the weight of the fish and are approved by the Outdoor Writers of the Ohio State Record Fish Committee in cooperation with fisheries biologists.

The tradition of keeping records

The Outdoor Writers of Ohio has been keeping records of record catches since the 1940s. The verification process is rigorous and involves working with experts in fisheries biology to ensure that all records meet the highest standards. The previous record, set by Kyle Rock, stood for almost three decades, highlighting the uniqueness of Teresa Croy’s catch.

The importance of white crappie in fishing culture

White crappie (Pomoxis annularis) is one of the most popular freshwater fish in North America, appreciated by both sport and recreational anglers. It is especially known for being caught in small bodies of water, such as ponds or small lakes. Many anglers find fishing for crappie a challenge due to their ability to quickly avoid baitfish and their variable activity throughout the year.

A place of exceptional fishing

The pond where the record fish was caught is located on the grounds of the Glandorf Rod and Gun Club, a place well known to local anglers. The club not only offers fishing opportunities, but also promotes responsible use of water resources and education about environmental protection. The Croy fishing highlights the importance of such places for recreation and social integration.
