Polish border guards thwarted smuggling 30,000 cigarettes through the Polish border. By accident they found a package before the addressee.
The officers of the Bug River Border Guard unit came across an unusual package. In a meteorological packet attached to a meteorological balloon, they found 30,000 cigarettes without Polish excise stamps.
They smuggled cigarettes using a balloon
An extraordinary discovery took place in the vicinity of Wola Uhruska in the Lublin province. Cigarettes had signs of Belarusian excise duty. A spokesman for the commander of the Border Guard Department, Capt. SG Dariusz Sienicki.
Sienicki added that a man was detained in this matter. After conducting procedural activities, he was released. Investigators do not rule out further detention. “As it turns out, the ingenuity of smugglers knows no boundaries,” said the Bug River Border Guard Department in a message.
Meteorological balloons a hit among smugglers
The border guards drew attention to the way they tried to smuggle cigarettes. They noticed that this is an increasingly popular way to illegally shift goods through the eastern border of our country.
As they explain, balloons use the eastern wind, fly through the Polish border and are later found by smugglers using the GPS location system. The Border Guard Department only this year thwarted the smuggling of illegal excise goods with a total value exceeding PLN 15 million.
