The case involving the use of GPT Chat in a hospital in Bydgoszcz is already being commented on throughout Poland. The facility’s management decided to respond to the confusion.

Artificial intelligence helps many of us not only with everyday doubts, but also at work. In some professions, her help seems to be a natural support, in others it raises questions about ethics and safety. It is known that at the current stage of artificial intelligence development, glaring errors still occur.

Bydgoszcz. GPT Chat trace on the patient’s card

Of course, botchats have also been used in medicine, which sometimes causes serious concerns on the part of patients. There has been a recent discussion on Facebook about the incident in Bydgoszcz. To the emergency room of the Provincial Children’s Hospital. J. Brudziński in Bydgoszcz, a 14-year-old patient was reported with headache, tingling and numbness in the shoulder area.

Internet users were concerned about the fact that on the card describing the examination and the subject interview, there was also a sentence that looked like it was copied straight from GPT Chat or another chatbot. “If you want, I can also prepare a more complete interview after a head injury in a child (with typical questions about loss of consciousness, vomiting, dizziness), which is often included in the emergency department documentation,” we read.

Jacek Bujko, a family doctor who publicized this case, summed up the entire event in one sentence. “It was only a matter of time,” he wrote. However, the journalists of “Express Bydgoski” were not satisfied with the humorous summary. They decided to contact the facility and ask about hospital procedures in the context of artificial intelligence and official medical documents.

– The Chat GPT tool was not used to make a diagnosis or develop a treatment plan – assured Danuta Kurylak, MD, deputy director for treatment at the Provincial Children’s Hospital in Bydgoszcz. – The resident doctor making the entry used the medical documentation forms applicable in the hospital, both in the subjective and objective examination – she added.

– The tool was used to edit three sentences of the interview for linguistic correction. No sensitive patient data was entered, explained Dr. Kurylak. She also emphasized that “diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are based on applicable medical standards”, and digital tools supporting the work of staff will be implemented as part of the program to accelerate digital transformation processes.
