In the Polish Cup final, Górnik Zabrze defeated Raków Częstochowa 2-0. The fans of this team had been waiting 54 years for such a triumph.

Polish Cup final. Górnik triumphs after lean years

Football historians emphasize that the team from Zabrze had been waiting for a similar victory since 1972. Then, in the Polish Cup final against Legia Warszawa, Górnik won 5:2, with four goals scored by the legendary Włodzimierz Lubański.

This is the seventh victory in the Polish Cup for Górnik. Only Legia has more of them, 14. Let us add that the team from Zabrze has been waiting for a trophy since 1988. It was also the team’s first final, played at the National Stadium. The last time Zabrze fought for any trophy was in 2001.

Raków has had much more success in recent years. Over the course of six years, he reached four finals and won two of them. Much of this is due to Marek Papszun, who currently coaches another club. In Saturday’s final, the Częstochowa team was led by Łukasz Tomczyk.

The goals in this match were scored by Roberto Massimo in the 32nd minute and Maksym Chłań in the 65th minute. At the end, after an argument on the pitch, Jonatan Braut Brunes was shown a red card.

Górnik Zabrze will fight for the Europa League

Górnik’s coach, Michal Gasparik, won another cup. In Slovakia, he has already won such competitions three times with Spartak Trnava.

Górnik will receive PLN 5 million as a prize for the victory, and Raków will leave with PLN 1 million. Additionally, with Saturday’s success, Zabrze guaranteed their participation in the Europa League qualifying round from the third round.
