There will be a Polish battle at Roland Garros. Will Iga Świątek take a rematch?

Just a dozen or so hours ago it seemed that Magda Linette might have big problems to successfully oppose the hard-hitting Jelena Ostapenko. Thanks to her heroic attitude, the tennis player from Poznań won success in the first round of Roland Garros 2026.
However, as it turned out, the Pole gained strength and showed even better tennis in the second round. And overall she dismissed the Latvian woman, who is considered… Iga Świątek’s nightmare.

Wednesday’s (i.e. May 27) second round match in Paris lasted almost exactly two hours. Linette started very well, winning the set 6:2. As it turned out, this result was repeated twice more, although in the second part Ostapenko had the upper hand. Most importantly, Linette managed to take matters into her own hands again.
Example? Not obvious, but the most important game number 5 in the third set. That’s when the Pole defended herself with her serve from 15:40. However, with Agnieszka Radwańska on her staff, Linette gained self-confidence, which she had lacked many times. As you can clearly see, it doesn’t have to be good news for Świątki.
Linette dismissed Ostapenko 6-2 in the final set. She won the aforementioned key game, taking a 3-2 lead. And she didn’t give up any more until the very end.
It is worth recalling that Świątek and Linette met relatively recently, during the WTA 1000 tournament match in Miami. In Florida, the team from Poznań came out on top, which was considered a big surprise at the time. This is hardly surprising, although the consequences of that defeat for the much higher-rated Świątek were much more serious. That match was the last one in which Wim Fissette was the Polish coach. The Belgian lost his job, and Francisco Roig is currently the Polish coach.
What can you expect from this clash? Certainly an interesting match in which Świątek will still be the favorite. Which is not such bad news for Linette, who is more experienced and has just equalized her best start in her career in Paris.
The last time the Poznań player was in the third round of RG was in 2021.
The Świątek-Linette match will take place next Friday (May 29). The exact time of the meeting will be known after the organizers of RG 2026 publish the daily schedule, i.e. around Thursday noon.

It is worth recalling that Iga Świątek won the Grand Slam event in the French capital four times. The Pole won for the first time in 2020. Then Świątek truly “introduced herself” to a wider audience.

The list of Świątek’s successes in Paris also includes the Olympic medal, which the Pole won during the 2024 Games. Although the “Queen of Paris” was the main favorite for the Olympic gold medal, the Polish representative ultimately won the “consolation” in the form of a bronze medal. Looking at history, the first tennis event in the history of the Polish Olympic movement – which is certainly worth noting.
RG 2026 matches are shown on Eurosport, on a total of four channels of the station. Additionally, the online competition is available via the HBO Max platform. The competition in the main tournament is scheduled from May 24 to June 7.
