There was a record that should not enjoy anyone. Scientists are surprised

Higher than usual temperatures have been observed in recent weeks not only in Poland. Temperatures around the world are surprising. Scientists confirmed that it was the warmest January in the history of measurements.

The EU Copernicus program allowed the scholars to determine that the average temperature on Earth in January was 13.23 degrees Celsius and was as much as 0.79 degrees higher than in 1991-2020. The record from last year was beaten by almost 0.1 degrees.

The warmest January in history

Scientists also noticed a longer and more disturbing trend. January was 18 of the last 19 months, in which temperature deviations exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius, which was adopted in the Paris agreement of 2015. This time the anomaly was 1.75 degrees.

Extremely large “heat bubbles” were recorded in the northern hemisphere. Red spots on the world map were seen in Canada, Eastern Europe and northern regions of Asia. Locally, it was 5-7 degrees warm than usual.

The researchers were surprised because they did not anticipate record measurements in January. This year, the lack of the phenomenon of El Nino was taken into account, which can globally conquer the temperature on the ground. El Nino is a persistent very warm waters in the equatorial zone in the Pacific.

Scientists concerned about the record without the participation of El Nino

Currently, the Pacific waters near the equator are even cooler than usual. This may mean the opposite phase to El Nino, or La Nina. Scientists do not hide that they are scared by record January, despite the lack of one of the more serious factors that may affect this result.

– The fact that we still see record temperatures outside the impact of El Nino is surprising – commented Samantha Burgess from the European medium -term forecasts. She pointed out that the La Nina cooling effect is too weak to stop the temperature increase, associated with climate change.
