There is only one king! A cosmic result at the Olympic Games
Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo with his sixth gold medal at Winter Olympics 2026! The Norwegian ski runner won the “royal” distance of 50 km on Sunday.
Just a few days ago, Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo equaled the all-time record in the number of Olympic Winter Olympic gold medals won. The Norwegian had just won his third title in the event held on the Apennine Peninsula, as we reported in WPROST.
What’s more, he decided to add another gold in the relay, taking the lead among the winter champions. It was known, however, that until the very end of Winter Olympics 2026, Klaebo could still improve his achievements, ultimately aiming for six(!) gold medals at one event.
WINTER 2026: Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo with his sixth gold medal!
At the Olympic Games in Italy, Klaebo won the following events: the 2×10 km combined race, the 10 km freestyle race, the individual and team sprints, and the relay. For dessert, there was a triumph on Saturday (i.e. February 21) over the “royal” distance of 50 km.
The 29-year-old ski runner (he will turn thirty in October this year) has won six Olympic Winter Olympic gold medals, and in total he has 11 of them. He also has Olympic silver and bronze.
Thus, Klaebo finally strengthened his lead in the all-time Winter Olympics standings. He overtook compatriot Marit Bjoergen, biathlete Ole Einar Bjoerndalen and runner Bjoern Daehli in the medal elite. The trio had eight Olympic championships under their belt. This ceiling seemed difficult to achieve, and Klaebo won almost the same amount of gold… only at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
It is worth noting Dominek Bury’s very good start in the 50 km race. The only Pole at the start took a very good 12th place. Which is the best result in the history of Poles’ starts over this distance at the Winter Olympics.
2026 Games in Italy. Where and when to watch the Poles’ starts?
The Polish national team during the opening games consists of 60 athletes. In the 21st century, there has never been a time when a Polish woman or a Pole was not on the Olympic podium during the Winter Olympics. During the last winter games, Poland finished the competition with one medal. The bronze medal was won by ski jumper Dawid Kubacki in the normal hill competition.
Kubacki’s result was beaten at the Winter Winter Olympics 2026 by Kacper Tomasiak, a debutant among Olympians. The 19-year-old great talent won a silver medal in the normal hill competition and a bronze medal in the large hill competition in Predazzo. Additionally, the jumpers also placed second on the podium during the duo competition. Paweł Wąsek performed in the duet alongside Tomasiak.
Another Olympic vice-championship was also won by another Olympic Games debutant, Vladimir Semirunniy, in the 10 km speed skating race.
In the history of the Olympic Games, the Polish national team has won a total of 27 medals – seven gold, ten silver and ten bronze, respectively. Interestingly, the first bronze medal for Poland was won by Franciszek Gąsienica-Groń (Nordic combined) almost exactly 70 years ago, during the Olympic Games in… Cortina d’Ampezzo. This year, history has come full circle in a beautiful Italian-Polish Olympic circle.
