The world vice-champion resumed his career! Emergency return of the former Polish representative
Łukasz Żygadło returns to the PlusLiga pitch! The 45-year-old director of Steam Hemarpol Norwida Częstochowa was officially included in the match squad.
Łukasz Żygadło, currently the director of Steam Hemarpol Norwid, is a kind of link between what once was and the contemporary view of volleyball in Częstochowa. The former player’s extensive achievements include, among others: three Champions League golds (2009, 2010, 2011), two in the Italian league (2011 and 2015) and the memorable, breakthrough silver at the World Championships (2006) and a historic triumph in the World League (2012). And these are just some of the long list of trophies and successes on his account.
PlusLiga: Łukasz Żygadło in Norwid’s match squad!
Where did the idea to return the 45-year-old director to the pitch come from? This is the result of an injury suffered by Quinn Issacson, the first player in this position in the team from Jasna Góra. Director Żygadło took part in several training sessions with the Częstochowa team, performed well – which is no surprise – and such a move was decided.
Of course, we are talking about an emergency situation during Issacson’s absence from the team from Częstochowa. In the team, on the side of healthy players, only Tomasz Kowalski remained as the setter. Żygadło will be a backup for his younger colleague, if necessary, ready to support one of the revelations of this PlusLiga season.
– After promotion to the PlusLiga, we had to focus strongly on the first team, first to survive, and now, in the current season, to take another step forward. This is quite a challenge, especially since three teams are relegated from the competition. We also want to show the community with our performances that we are working on something really interesting. I must admit, the whole thing was a damn difficult task – he said in an interview for Wprost.pl, then “only the director” of Norwid.
Now you can see that the bar is set even higher from his perspective.
If Żygadło appears on the pitch, it will be his return to the domestic court after a six-year break. Recently in Poland, quite unfortunately, the runner-up in the world championship (2006) was a player of Stocznia Szczecin. A project that turned out to be a huge volleyball flop. With players such as Żygadło and Bartosz Kurek in their ranks, Szczecin did not even manage to finish the league season. It ended with an organizational and financial failure, the largest professional volleyball league in the history of Poland.
First opportunity to return to the pitch? Monday (i.e. December 2), 8:30 p.m. Steam Hemarpol Norwid will face Trefl Gdańsk at home.
