This year’s edition of the European Award for Urban Public Space awarded a Polish park. This place is located in Warsaw.
The international jury awarded nominations for the European Award for Urban Public Space. Among the twenty-five distinguished proposals from all over the continent, there was one place from Poland. This is a Warsaw park well-known primarily to residents of the northern districts of the capital. It was created relatively recently – the new attraction in Białołęka was opened to residents in October 2025. There you will find piers, bicycle paths and as much as 13 hectares of space for relaxation.
Żerański Park appreciated abroad
City parks are a very important element of public space. This year, there are quite a few of them on the short list of nominees for the Urban Public Space award – alongside squares, gardens, bridges, renovated ports, and even urban railways – all places created to simply make life better for city residents. The contenders for the main prize include: parks in Denmark (Grønningen-Bispeparken in Copenhagen and Køge Kyst in Køge), public thermal baths on the Methana Peninsula in Greece, the Graça cable car in Lisbon in Portugal, which will provide access to the castle, and the space of the former North Station in Vienna, which has been transformed into a new green oasis of the city. There is also a completely new place for rest, walking and cycling in Warsaw, i.e. Żerański Park.
The competition results will be available in the fall
The organizers will announce the winners of this year’s European Prize for Urban Public Space in October. As the Warsaw City Hall reminds, the mere nomination of Żerański Park in this competition is a great distinction for the capital.
“In the new park in Żerań, you will not find well-kept lawns or flower beds geometrically planted with thousands of perennials and flowering shrubs. Instead, you will find tall grass, bushes, mosses and lichens, as well as decaying organic matter and thick layers of mulch. Żerański Park is not a place where nature has been subordinated to man,” says Przemek Ciepka from the Architecture and Business magazine.
