The volleyball world is in mourning! Grbic delivered very sad news
Aleksandar Boricić is dead. The long-time president of the European Volleyball Federation (CEV) and member of the FIVB board died at the age of 78 in Serbia.
Very sad news arrived on Wednesday (i.e. March 4) around noon.
– I have just learned that the president of the volleyball federation of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, president of CEV Serbia and vice-president of the FIVB, Aleksandar Boricić, died due to the effects of a stroke. I will not list my successes, titles, hobbies and achievements. There is a sea of them. The man from whom I learned the most about sports diplomacy and sports process management. Most deserving of the successes of the golden generation and the status of our volleyball. Although he was held back because of his honesty, he remained loyal to himself, his family and what he loved until the end – wrote Vladimir Grbic on social media, a former outstanding volleyball player.
Vladimir Grbic is the brother of Nikola Grbic, coach of the Polish national volleyball team.
Aleksandar Boricić is dead. Sad news from the volleyball world
There is no doubt that Boricić was one of the most important figures in European and world volleyball authorities in recent years. He was the head of the European Volleyball Federation (CEV) in 2015-24. In addition to his invaluable contribution to the development of the discipline, during his rule Boricić also became famous several times for… not very positively received moves that were widely commented on in many countries – including Poland.
In 2024, Boricić was replaced as head of CEV by Croatian Roko Sikirić.
He was also the second executive vice-president of the International Federation of Volleyball (FIVB).
Boricić was a legend of Serbian and previously Yugoslav volleyball. In total, he played 103 matches for the national team and won, among others, a bronze medal at the European Championships in 1975. Throughout his career, he was associated with the famous, multi-section club from Belgrade – Red Star.
