Terrible news has come from Kenya. Rebecca Cheptegei, a participant in the Olympic Games in Paris, where she competed in the marathon, has died.
Fans may remember Rebecca Cheptegei from the games. In the marathon distance, the Ugandan athlete came in 44th. She then went to Kenya, where she trains every day. There, she could count on much better training conditions than in her homeland. Unfortunately, on September 2, a tragedy occurred, which is already being talked about a lot in the world of athletics.
Cheptegei was burned alive
The Ugandan athlete was taken to hospital with numerous burns to her body. It was said that it covered 75 percent. All because she was set on fire by her boyfriend after previously dousing him with gasoline. The fight for the life of the Parisian athlete began immediately. The entire situation was observed by neighbors who immediately rushed to help Cheptegei and then called for help.
“You could hear the couple arguing outside the house. During the argument, the guy poured fuel on the woman and then set her on fire,” Jeremiah ole Kosiom, Trans-Nzoia County Police Chief, told ESPN.
On Thursday (5 September), the BBC reported that Cheptegei had died. Her injuries were so severe that they could not save her. The man who set her on fire is still in the same hospital. He also had burns on his body, but, not surprisingly, he arrived at the hospital in much better condition than the runner.

Rebecca Cheptegei was born in 1991. Initially, she ran middle distances, but later became a marathon runner. The result in Paris was not satisfactory for her, but before that she had achieved success in the form of triumph in the Padua marathon. Her personal best is 2:22:47. Many fans sent her words of support after the drama of September 2.
Unfortunately, the Ugandan will no longer have the opportunity to run on any course. The question remains what punishment will be meted out to the aggressor who set her on fire.
