The tax on losses requires a change in the mentality of Poles. Will there be any takers in 2027?
Investing is not the same as saving. So far, Poles have paid tax on profits, which seems acceptable. Will they also accept tax on losses?
Taking money to the bank, i.e. investing it, is one thing, and investing, i.e. engaging capital in various ventures in the hope of making a profit and increasing your wealth, is completely different. The latter strategy may well end in a loss that must be accepted – also for tax purposes.
From 2027, with the introduction of Personal Investment Accounts (OCI), there will also be a new tax to pay. The financial industry is wondering how to convince Poles to accept the potential loss and the new tax associated with it – on accumulated assets.
Belka’s tax is not the same as property tax. New possibilities?
Anyone who wants to try something new must first realize an important difference. Belka’s tax You only pay based on what you achieve profit. There is no profit, there is no Belka tax. Tax on accumulated assets is something completely different. Jis charged from total value of the property accumulated in the account, regardless of whether the investment earned or resulted in a loss.
Belka’s tax is 19%. and does not provide for any free allowance. The tax on the value of assets will be much lower – 0.85%. at the beginning – then it will gradually increase. But it also has an advantage: the means to 100 thousand PLN will be exempt from it.
These are important differences in the context of the introductory tax reform Personal Investment Accounts (OKI), i.e a new savings and investment account that will start working January 1, 2027.
Important OKI limits. Possible an infinite number of bills
This is an attractive proposition because up to PLN 100,000 PLN offers full tax exemption: both from the Belka tax and from the new tax on assets. But there’s a catch! This tax exemption applies only to domestic assets! Shares, ETFs and foreign bonds will be subject to a new tax from the first zloty invested.
Over 100 thousand PLN asset tax will have to be paid not only on unrealized profits, but even in the event of losses – this will be something new for Poles.
Under the act, everyone will be able to have an infinite number of OKI accounts opened in various financial institutions. However, there is a strict rule: one investor also means only one asset tax exemption limit:
-
100 thousand PLN is the exemption limit for investment assets, such as shares or funds.
-
25 thousand PLN is the limit for safer assets, such as deposits and bonds.
