There was a tragic accident in Białka Tatrzańska, the background of which – according to investigators – could have been an illegal race between two cars.

The incident occurred on Friday evening, April 24, on national road No. 49 towards Jurgów. There was still heavy traffic, but – as it was determined – two cars with Slovak number plates were moving much faster than the regulations allow.

According to witnesses, the drivers were driving very close to each other, dynamically negotiating corners and undertaking risky maneuvers. On one of the road curves, the driver of the Ford Mondeo lost control of the vehicle. The car left the road and hit a concrete culvert with great force. – The 26-year-old driver died on the spot. The injuries were fatal – said Asp. staff. Roman Wieczorek from KPP Zakopane.

A 24-year-old passenger was trapped in the wreck – to extract her, firefighters had to use specialized equipment. Doctors describe her condition as very serious.

The following services worked on site for many hours: the police, the prosecutor and an accident reconstruction expert. At that time, the first reports of witnesses appeared who had no doubts: in their opinion, the drivers were racing.

The second car initially left the scene. He returned only after several dozen minutes. There were four people inside and – according to investigators – initially no one wanted to admit to driving the car. Ultimately, one of the men took responsibility. – He had 1.7 per mille of alcohol. It should be remembered that the examination was performed several dozen minutes after the incident, emphasizes Aneta Hładki from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zakopane.

The driver was charged with participating in an illegal race and driving under the influence of alcohol. Investigators applied new regulations regarding illegal road rallies to him because his driving license was confiscated and his car was seized. As they emphasize, the case is to have a clear impact also outside Poland.

Investigators emphasize that although the second driver took part in an illegal race, there is no evidence that he directly caused the accident. However, everything indicates that excessive speed and recklessness were the key factors. The prosecutor’s office announces that the case will not end gently – the alleged acts are punishable by up to five years in prison.

The findings show that a group of six young Slovaks had previously spent time in one of the establishments in the Polish Tatra Mountains. After a few hours of fun together, they headed towards the border. However, instead of a calm ride, they chose competition on the road.

Residents of the region admit that similar situations are not uncommon. – This is not the first time that young drivers organize races here, after crossing the border they drive as if they were not bound by road traffic regulations. Interestingly, on the Slovak side of the border this driving complies with the regulations – say the inhabitants of Białka in an interview with “Gazeta Wyborcza”. – In the evenings, mainly on weekends, you can hear the roar of the engine and the screeching of tires. I’m afraid to leave the house. It happens again and again, they add.
