You cannot ignore this tenement house. Located on the Royal Road, the four-story building is a real gem in the collection of Gdańsk architecture. The “Steffens House”, also known as the “Golden Tenement House”, beloved by tourists, will soon change its owner. The monument, currently belonging to the Maritime University, will be for sale next year. Although the exact price of the property has not been determined, the transaction may amount to even several dozen million zlotys. “Our goal is to offer the Golden Tenement House for sale to an unlimited circle of recipients in order to obtain the highest possible price,” reveals Zuzanna Szwedek-Kwiecińska, spokeswoman for the Maritime University.
The tender will take place next year
Every guided tour in Gdańsk cannot be completed without a visit to the “Steffens House”. At Długi Targ 41, tourists can find one of the most beautiful tenement houses in Poland. This 17th-century building, rebuilt after World War II, with four stone sculptures on the top of the facade depicting the cardinal virtues – Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance, has been the seat of the Maritime University for years. However, in just a few months it may have a completely new owner. When moving to a new facility, the university intends to sell the property and use the funds received for development. As “Gazeta Wyborcza” writes, the announcement of the tender that will select the lucky buyer is expected to take place next year. “The university is to use the funds obtained for current expenses, including: related to the relocation and integration of the Maritime Institute to its new headquarters,” the daily reports.
A monument worth millions
However, what the seller can count on remains unknown. However, there may be really big money at stake. According to Wyborcza, similar facilities in Poland reached the final price of several million zlotys. This includes: about the tenement house in Wrocław at Plac Uniwersytecki or the buildings at Plac Teatralny. “It seems that the value of the Golden Tenement House in Gdańsk is much higher, but everything will be verified by the market,” we read. The new owner will be able to run service activities in the facility and use it as a residential facility.
