The suspicions have been confirmed. We know what the future holds for the England coach
England finished second in a row in the European Championship. They will be heading to the next major tournament with a new manager at the helm. Gareth Southgate has officially stepped down as manager!
The suspicions have been confirmed. Gareth Southgate is leaving his position after eight years with the England national team. Opinions on his work with the team are divided – especially after the last European Championship. The sons of Albion did reach the grand final, but the coach was accused of wasting the potential that lies dormant in this team.
Federation announces Southgate leaves
Southgate’s departure from the England national team was announced by the English Football Association. It was the coach’s decision to resign from further management of the team. Earlier, there were voices saying that the officials wanted to extend his contract until the World Cup in 2026. Ultimately, this will not happen.
“As a proud Englishman, it was the honour of my life to play for England and then coach them. It meant everything to me and I gave it my all. But it’s time for a change and a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my last game as England manager,” Southgate said after the break, as quoted by the FA.
The former England coach pointed out that over the years he has met exceptional people who have helped him. He also mentioned the fans.
“We have the best fans in the world and their support means the world to me. I am an England fan and always will be. I can’t wait to watch and celebrate as the players create more special memories and unite and inspire the nation as we know they can. Thank you, England – for everything,” he added.
Southgate as England manager
Southgate has managed the national team in 102 matches, winning 64, drawing 20 and losing 18. As well as two European Championship finals, he has also coached two World Cups, finishing fourth in 2018 and crashing out in the quarter-finals four years later.
