The “Sleeping Beauty of the North Sea” is a pristine island. This is what it offers to tourists

Completely car-free – like Croatian Vrgada or Prvić, pristine, without lighting at night and inhabited by less than a thousand people. This is the “Sleeping Beauty of the North Sea”, i.e. the island of Baltrum in Germany. Its cleanliness and picturesque views are striking. This includes: due to its calmness, it is compared to a fairy-tale character who fell into a deep sleep.

An interesting term was assigned to the island of Baltrum in an article by kreiszeitung.de. Journalists emphasize that this place in Lower Saxony definitely stands out from all others of this type. It belongs to a group of seven other inhabited East Frisian islands, but is considered particularly untouched. Interestingly, this is true despite the fact that tourists come there. However, it is difficult to compare the place to Polish Świnoujście or Kołobrzeg, where the beaches are almost flooded with windbreaks all summer long.

The island has an area of ​​just 6.5 square kilometers, which makes it the smallest municipality in the eastern Frisian region of Lower Saxony. The first mention of it dates back to 1289, and beachgoers were said to have arrived there only at the end of the 19th century. The place tempts visitors to this day and offers interesting attractions. Nature plays the main role, among others: 14 km long sandy beach.

While relaxing on a German island, in the center you will find a bell recovered from a Dutch shipwreck. You will learn about the history of the place thanks to interesting exhibitions in the Old Customs House and the National Park House. Walking around the area during the day, you will notice thatched houses and narrow winding streets. Only every now and then someone on a bicycle will pass by and you won’t see any streetlights. Most of Baltrum is part of the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It includes, among others: dunes and salt marshes.

Instead of large hotel complexes, we will see facilities connected to nature and we will definitely take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
