The silent hero of the Polish national team. A leader who gives the team peace

Piotr Zieliński

Even though he didn’t score or assist, Piotr Zieliński deserves recognition for the Poland-Netherlands match. “Zielu” is the leader of the second line of the Polish national team.

Piotr Zieliński, after a difficult start to the season at Inter, seems to be becoming more and more important in Milan. Coach Christian Chivu is increasingly willing to use the Pole, and the minutes played by “Zielek” are very good news for Jan Urban. The Polish national team is dependent, in a positive sense, on this midfielder. Zieliński is an indispensable player for the national team.

Poland – Netherlands. Piotr Zieliński is the unsung hero of the national team!

As coach Urban announced, the Poles played without a classic, defensive midfielder on Friday evening. Zieliński took on the role of the “six”. The idea, which was tested during the previous coach’s work, worked very well this time. Zieliński was “in the game” all the time, he was able to relieve his teammates and he put his stamp on virtually every time the Poles played the ball.

What’s more, Zieliński was also able to work with destruction in difficult moments.

How does the national team coach see the Inter player as a “six” after the match?

– It will depend on who we have higher and what players. I think we had a lot of offensive players in this match and I didn’t want to give up on them. Moreover, we were missing a typical defensive midfielder like Bartek Slisz, but we took advantage of the situation in this way. However, I still don’t have an answer as to what Piotrek’s role alongside Sebastian Szymański would be like. This is what I wanted to find out, but due to an injury, Bartek came in and it looked good. Would it have looked as good, or maybe even better, if Sebastian had played? I don’t know that. And I won’t find out in the next match, because Sebastian has an injury and he definitely won’t be able to come back – said the Polish national team coach about the idea with Zieliński.

The mentioned ones – the injury of Sebastian Szymański and the introduction of Bartosz Kapustka – did not change one thing. Zieliński was still the king of the second line, providing a lot of comfort for the team. Priceless value.

– Was Zieliński the best? A matter of evaluation. In my opinion, he played very well, such players are appreciated, they are always higher on the pedestal. For me, Tomek Kędziora played a very good competition, Kamyk played great, Ziółek did it without any problems. Today everyone played to the best of their abilities, that’s why we achieved this result. Besides, I think we were closer to victory, Urban added at the conference.

Will Zieliński, positioned slightly lower, as the number six, be the Poles’ idea of playing in this configuration on a regular basis? This cannot be ruled out, although the fact is that Poles certainly have at least a few variants that have looked quite favorable in recent months.

However, one thing is certain. Zieliński against the Netherlands showed, not for the first time, the scale of football quality we are talking about. He is simply a top-class, world-class player.

Coach Jan Urban is still undefeated. The national team has changed its face!

The last months of the Polish national football team have been impressive. In July, Jan Urban took over the team after Michał Probierz. The former representative, most recently working for Górnik Zabrze, immediately took action and the positive effects are visible.

Poland played six matches under Urban’s supervision, without losing even once. It started with a difficult trip to Rotterdam, where the Poles drew 1:1 with the Dutch. Then, at home, in Chorzów, the team recorded a key victory – taking revenge on Finland for the blamage in Helsinki (1:2) – winning 3:1. This happened back in September.

The October international break means two more matches and two victories. First, a friendly match, again in Chorzów – a modest 1-0 against New Zealand – a team that has already guaranteed participation in the 2026 World Cup. In addition, a valuable 2-0 qualifying victory in Kaunas against Lithuania.

In November, Urban’s team started with another draw, with the same result (1:1) as in Rotterdam, but this time at PGE Narodowy with the Dutch. With this result, Oranje secured promotion to the World Cup one round before the end of the qualifying round. The Poles have one more match to play in November, on Monday (i.e. November 17), an away match against Malta – from 8:45 p.m.
