A tourist catamaran with 55 people on board sank off the coast of the Dominican Republic. The tourists were saved.

A group of tourists who were sailing through the Gulf of Samana on Sunday, November 9, had to suddenly evacuate from the ship. The catamaran Boca de Yuma, with 55 people on board, began to sink off the coast of the Dominican Republic due to a failure. The Navy provided assistance to the injured on site. All participants of the cruise were saved – after the action they were sent back to the mother ship Mein Schiff 1, belonging to the TUI Cruises group.

Accident during a cruise in the Caribbean

The Gulf of Samana is one of the most beautiful places to see in the Dominican Republic. This is where a group of German tourists arrived last weekend on board a catamaran. The trip consisting of several dozen participants ended unexpectedly due to a failure of the ship’s hull. More and more water entered the deck, and the vessel eventually sank. Passengers were forced to jump into the water, from which they were pulled out by members of the Dominican Navy. “The ship departed from Embat Pier and was carrying passengers from the Mein Schiff 1 cruise ship operated by TUI Cruises,” we read. As a result of the accident, several people suffered minor injuries.

The crew did not help the passengers

Although, according to Rmf24.pl, the passengers safely returned to the Mein Schiff 1 ship and are currently continuing their journey towards Jamaica, the controversy surrounding the catamaran accident continues. According to some passengers, the crew was not prepared for the accident and did not know how to help the passengers.

A spokeswoman for the TUI Cruises travel agency confirmed that the catamaran used during the cruise was operated by an external operator. The cruise line said it will continue to investigate the incident in cooperation with local authorities and that affected passengers will receive proper compensation.
