The rival gave it her all, but it wasn’t enough. Iga Świątek continues playing at Wimbledon

Iga Świątek is not slowing down. The Polish representative has registered for the next phase of Wimbledon, thanks to a solid triumph over Petra Martić. Her rival gave it her all.
After a confident victory in the first round, Iga Świątek approached the next one calmly. She faced Petra Martić, with whom she had played three times in the past and each time she had finished the match triumphant. In Thursday’s duel at Wimbledon it was no different. The world’s number one racket fulfilled the role of the favorite and won 6:4, 6:3.
Iga Świątek advances to the next phase of Wimbledon
The match started with both players winning on their own serves. Neither Świątek started strongly with momentum, nor did Martić give any great signals. However, the Croatian managed to surprise the Pole by sending an ace. Considering the conditions of the 2nd round of Wimbledon, it could be called an even match. A worrying situation came in the eighth game. Petra Martić had to ask for a medical timeout. The medical aid took a long time to deal with the lower back of the Croatian, who lay down on the court.
After a few minutes, Martić returned to the fight, for which she received huge applause. If any of the Polish fan was waiting for the 85th player in the ranking to quickly surrender the match, they had to abandon their expectations. The opponent from Raszyn fought until the very end. Iga Świątek broke her almost at the last moment, before another draw (6:4).
The second set was also very even. Both players were unable to break each other, although Świątek was much more confident on her own serve. In the middle of the set, the Pole could still boast that she did not allow herself to be broken. Martić defended herself against another break for a long time, but finally capitulated in the eighth game. The world’s number one racket took the lead 5:3, and then completed the formalities on her own serve. She won 6:3 and advanced to the next stage of the tournament.
Iga Świątek to play against Julia Putintseva in the next round of Wimbledon
In the third round of Wimbledon, Iga Świątek will play against Yulia Putintseva, who defeated Czech Katerina Siniakova 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in the qualifying match.
The WTA ranking leader is the only Polish woman left in the singles competition (regardless of gender). Earlier, Magda Linette and Magdalena Fręch had said goodbye to Wimbledon. On Thursday, Hubert Hurkacz, who had been fighting for a long time with Arthur Flis, had to give up his match due to health problems.
